Elizabeth Moon grew up in south Texas and started writing at an early age.   She attended Rice University, earning a degree in history,  then joined the Marines, serving on active duty from 1968-1971.  After that, she went for a second degree, this time in biology, from the University of Texas at Austin.  She did graduate work in biology at U.T.
