Channel 5 news on Dallas city council toy gun vote:
DALLAS -- The Dallas City Council unanimously approved a toy gun ban on Wednesday, but the current version isn't nearly as strong as earlier proposals. The proposed ordinance bans people from brandishing replica firearms in a public place. The law also makes it illegal for someone to remove the bright-colored tip. Further, the proposal also makes it illegal to attach laser pointers to the toy guns as well as blocking the sale of the guns on ice cream trucks.
The new law is somewhat weaker than what was proposed a year ago, but it does have the backing of the Dallas Police Department. The new law doesn't mandate that toy guns be colored white, bright orange, green, yellow, pink, purple or translucent or transparent.Violators are subject to a Class C Misdemeanor and a $500 fine.

Police Chief Gets Behind Toy Gun Ban
DALLAS -- Dallas Police Chief David Kunkle is joining parents in a push to ban sales of toy guns.Parents showed up at a city council meeting on Wednesday and showed toy guns they said were purchased by kids from local ice cream vendors. The parents worry that the guns are dangerous, because they look too real. "Police officers don't have the luxury of time to determine whether or not it's a toy gun or a real gun. They have to decide if they see a weapon. They have to make a decision," said Dallas resident Peter Jackson.Kunkle said he supports the ban and said he is working with city attorneys to see if something can be done."
